Not so long ago, people used to go hunting small deer, armadillos and birds for their own consumption. Because of a decreasing number of wild animals on the one hand and a growing consciousness of the importance of preservation on the other hand, this practice is disappearing. For education, health services and groceries people have to go to the nearby village of São Brás 5 km away, or the town of Santarém 17 km away. The climate in Santa Luzia is much more pleasant than in the town of Santarém, because of its forest location.
